Shaving Without Blocking The Sink: A Guide For Men

Jul 10, 2023

Have you found yourself standing before the mirror, razor in hand, contemplating how to go about your morning shave without blocking the sink? If you nodded in agreement, then this guide is for you. Hair creates a real mess in your sink drain because it can combine with other substances like soap scum, shaving cream, dirt and oils, forming clusters which cause blockages.

Avoiding the Mess: How to Shave Wisely

Method One: Use a Bowl

While shaving over the sink is most men’s go to, it’s not good for your plumbing . Rather than shaving over pooled sink water, use a bowl of water instead. This way you can keep hair away from your drains and simply drain the water outside and discard your shaving cream scum and whiskers in the bin once you’re finished.

Method Two: Use a Sink Liner

We get it! Shaving over the sink is convenient. There’s a mirror and lots of space and if any hair gets on your tiles, it’s easy to clean up. If you want to stay by the sink that’s fine, but make sure you put down paper towels or a sink liner before you start shaving or trimming. This way, once you’re done you can grab the paper or liner and chuck it all in the bin.

Method Three: Use a Sink Strainer

If you absolutely insist on wet shaving over the sink, you can also buy a specialised sink strainer. These devices act like little sieves, catching hair and can help prevent sink clogs. Keep in mind if you have fine hair, the strainer may not catch everything.

Undo the Damage

If you’ve been disposing hair down your drains, there’s a good change your drains are somewhat clogged. Give your drains a clean out with baking soda and vinegar once or twice a month to clear your pipes and prevent future blockages. The best way to do is by pouring half cup of baking soda into the drain, followed by a cup of white vinegar, then waiting 10 minutes before rinsing it down with hot water. If you can’t clear the blockages or notice you sink draining slowly, it’s time to call a professional plumber.
